Word of the Year for 2021

January 13, 2021

Listen to this post.

"The way you do great things is by setting great goals."

—Bill de Blasio, New York City Mayor (New Year's Eve, 2020)

Dear students,

Happy New Year! Do you like to make New Year's resolutions? Instead of deciding what not to do at the beginning of a new year, I always choose a Word of the Year.

My Word of the Year for 2021 is "zeal." Here is the definition from Lexico dictionary.

zeal (noun): great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective

I chose the word "zeal" because I think it will inspire me to bring enthusiasm to lots of different goals, including work goals, family goals, and personal goals. In 2021, I'll do my best to bring energy and enthusiasm into every space I'm in.

My new office wall offers a strong visual for my Word of the Year! It's a fun backdrop for virtual meetings and a useful conversation starter. The connected names symbolize the importance of teamwork (and my own love of words).

I have about 15 more ESL Library staff names to add (waiting on more wooden tiles to arrive)! My pup Rootbeer is also full of energy and keeps my family moving, even during lockdown. (He's hoping I'll add his name to the wall!)

What's your Word of the Year for 2021? Ask your teacher to assign the ESL Library lesson How to Write a Basic Paragraph. In this lesson, you will practice writing a short paragraph about your Word of the Year. If you want to share your writing, please copy your paragraph in the comments below for all of us to see!

You don't have to be an ESL Library student to share your Word of the Year. Anyone (teachers and ESL Library staff) can participate by sharing their word in the comments below. Please tell us why you chose your word.

Best of luck with your language learning throughout 2021!

XOXO

Tara & the ESL Library Team

Wonderful! I like that idea.
My word of the year for 2021 is 'resilient'. We and my adult students have made many changes in our lives to adjust the lockdown and learn many new skills such as wearing a facemask wherever we go, using zoom and esl library for our online classes. We continue to learn more digital skills to face the changes in every walk of our lives. Thank you to ESL Library team to make our lessons more meaningful and organized.

Hi, Pauline! That's the perfect word for so many teachers and learners this year. We're so proud of you for adapting to these new circumstances and for never giving up on the language learning journey! As you mentioned, digital literacy is a skill you and your students will continue to use throughout your lives. Best of luck in 2022! I can't wait to hear what your new word will be. I'm already thinking of one for myself...

Hi Amandeep! So it sounds like "complete" is your word of the year for 2022. That's a great word and goal! For me, starting is always easier than finishing.

Thanks for joining in the challenge. We have been sharing our 2022 words over on this post in case you want to read it too: https://ellii.com/blog/word-of-the-year-2022

I choose "safe" as my word for 2022. I hope that when the pandemic ends in 2022, all people will be safe and the world will continue to develop in peace. We can't let the efforts of those scientists and medical workers go to waste, hoping that when the virus is eliminated, every family member and friend can hug each other happily as long as they want. No more travel restrictions and city lockdowns. Everyone can travel safely and breathe free air without masks.

Hi Ian,
That's a heartfelt word to choose! I love it. It felt like we were getting close in the fall, but now it feels like we took a step backwards. I hope we get there soon! Stay positive.

Fulfill This year; I want to feel complete and fulfilled and know that nothing is missing. Fulfillment is not an easy task, we are always wanting more, but it is time to experience that feeling of fulfillment.

That is a fantastic, unique word. I've collected dozens of words from family and friends this year and that one didn't come up!

My word for 2024 is "smile."
