In this digital-only lesson featuring content from The Washington Post, students read an article about a lawyer who accidentally uses a cat filter during a virtual court hearing. This lesson includes vocabulary tasks, comprehension and writing tasks, and video footage of the incident.

Filters Are Fun

In this lesson, students read about and discuss the definition of “fun” based on different experts’ findings and opinions. This lesson includes practice writing a common noun clause with a simple sentence frame. Students write a guided summary of a partner’s recipe for fun using a model from the reading.

In this lesson, students have an opportunity to get creative, practice basic tenses, build vocabulary, and work on their speaking skills. You can also use this lesson to promote social-emotional learning. A one-page printable version is also available.

**Note:** Before you look at this picture story, you may want to teach your students the expression "think outside the box" (_to think in a creative way_). Then ask your students about the story title. They may want to come up with their own creative title!

Our senses help us take in information about the world around us. Look at a photo of a group of young people holding sparklers at night. Imagine being part of the scene and engaging all five senses.
