A new way to check in on your students

We know how much time teachers spend clicking through assignments to piece together how a student is doing, so we built something to help. We've added a new Activity tab right inside the class page so you can now look at results student by student across all their assignments instead of having to go assignment by assignment. It's a small addition, but it makes a big difference when you're trying to get a sense of how an individual learner is progressing.

We call this new feature Student Activity Reports

The navigation works like flipping through a stack of pages. Click on any student, then a lesson, and then a task, and each view layers on top of the last. The edge of the previous sheet stays visible so you can quickly flip back to it.

We also put a lot of thought into making the navigation feel predictable. Moving between students and assignments, you'll always know where you are and how to get back. No unexpected dead ends mid session.

We hope you like it. Give it a try and let us know what you think. And stay tuned for more enhancements to our reporting tools coming soon!

Introducing Individual Student Assignments

Great news, teachers!

As of today, you can now select which individual students receive specific assignments within any class.

Here's how it works:

Click on a lesson, video, or flashcard set in your Prepping or Teaching lane within any of your classes

A modal will open with your assignment preferences for that lesson

Click the "Students" tab in the top navigation of the modal

Switch the setting from "All students" to "Some students"

Select the students you want to assign the lesson to and remember to hit "Save" inside the modal before closing it

Only the selected students will see the assignment inside their class dashboard.

We know that a lot of you have been asking for this feature for a while now. So thanks for your patience, and we hope it's a big help!

Introducing Individual Student Assignments

Ellii is making some changes to our navigation system to simplify how you find, save, and assign materials, and how you generally get around the site. The changes will go live on October 2, 2025.

Here’s what has changed:

Our top navigation bar

Our Lesson Section Index page

Our Lesson Section pages

The "Like" feature

Let’s dive into each...

1. We've simplified the top navigation

We've made three changes to the top navigation.

First, our navigation bar has been simplified. The Materials tab, Classes tab, and Saved tab have been combined into one universal menu we call the "Everything" menu. So now, to get to any of our three main areas of the site, you simply need to click one button. Click "Everything"!

Second, our search tool has been brought to the middle of the navigation bar, making it more accessible and easier to spot.

And third, our administrator tools for managing your team and viewing usage reports have been conveniently moved to the Accounts menu on the right side of the navigation bar.

2. The Lesson Page Index now includes genre filters, pins, and a plain-text list view

Our redesigned navigation in our Lesson Page Index includes a new genre tag filter at the top of the page, so you no longer have to scroll forever to get to a particular section you’re interested in. Just click a genre tag to filter to your favorite lesson sections.

We’ve also moved our Resources into the Lesson Page. What used to live on its own page is now available as one of the filter genres at the top. Inside, you’ll find all the same great resources such as Assessment & Reflections, Certificates, Grammar Charts, and more, now easier to access in one place.

We’ve also added a feature that lets you pin the lesson sections you use the most and access them all on one dedicated personalized Pinned page.

Lastly, we built a plain-text index view to quickly see and scan all lesson section titles in a single, simple snapshot page.

3. Each lesson section now includes category tags, and all lessons have an instant "Add to class" button

Most lesson sections on Ellii include categories to appropriately divide the many lessons by theme or target structure. In the past, you would sometimes find yourself endlessly scrolling to get to a category lower down the page. Now, we’ve converted our categories into filter tags at the top of each lesson section, so that you can instantly jump to the category you’re most interested in with just one click.

We’ve also added a + button next to every lesson title on the index page so that you can add that lesson to a class without having to click into it first. Super convenient!

4. Likes have been retired. Your old likes have a new home.

We have retired the "Like" button on Ellii. If you were using the "Like" button before, all of the materials you saved have been moved into a new folder in your Folders area. The name of the folder is aptly called "My Likes," but you can change the name to anything you prefer. From now on, you can put your favorite lessons into that folder.

Why did we retire the "Like" button? 1) Because it was not being used often. More people were putting content into their folders than utilizing the "Like" button. And 2) we think that it should possibly be reintroduced down the road to specifically indicate if you liked a lesson you taught, rather than be used as a favorites/saving feature. We think folders are better suited for saving your favorite items.

Where are the English Storylines?

Our English Storylines courses (Everyday Idioms, and Detective Series) have been moved to our Courses section. You can find them here.

Supporting Teachers Through Change

We understand that change can sometimes feel overwhelming—especially if you’ve been using Ellii for a long time and are comfortable with the way things were. These updates are designed to make Ellii easier to navigate, cleaner in design, and more intuitive for all teachers, no matter how you use the platform. Our goal is to give you back valuable time so you can focus on teaching and connecting with your students. We’re confident that once you’ve had a chance to explore the new design, you’ll find it not just different, but a big step forward.

A New Way to Navigate Ellii

https://esllibrary.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/post/title_image/2719/Ben_A-New-Way-to-Navigate-Ellii_Banner.png

We've just built and deployed another really cool new game called Ellii Dilemmas. Have you tried it yet?

Just like Ellii Polls, Ellii Dilemmas are super simple, highly engaging, and delightfully fun. 😎

With Ellii Dilemmas, your students face impossible choices—two difficult options with no clear right answer—and must choose, justify, and defend their pick.

So how does it work?

Start by presenting an Ellii Dilemma on your screen in front of your class. Have your students join the session by scanning a QR code.

Have students read the dilemma on their own devices and vote for the choice they would make in that particular situation.

Assign your students to small groups to discuss their choices using the built-in technology. If you're teaching online, you can put your students in breakout rooms.

Gather again as a full group and encourage students to use the "Speak up" function to explain their reasoning and back up their choices.

Finally, after students have had a chance to speak up, get everyone to vote again to see if anyone's opinion has been swayed. Compare the results.

You can use Ellii Dilemmas as a warm-up or cooldown activity to start or end any class.

Check out the video above to see how it works. Then try it out with your students this week and let us know what you think! We will be adding more dilemmas soon.

Teaching with Ellii

A more organized teacher is a better teacher, don't you think?
We do! So we built a clean and simple organizational feature we're calling "Lesson Planner."

The Lesson Planner is designed as a Kanban board with three lanes: Prepping, Teaching, and Taught. Drag Ellii content across any lane to effortlessly prepare for your classes ahead, instantly assign lessons to your students, and see what you were working on recently. It's a super simple way to stay organized and teach better.

To get content into the Lesson Planner, simply click on the Add to Class button from any Lesson or Resource page, choose the class and lane you'd like to save it to, and you're done! You will immediately be able to see your selected lesson content in the Lesson Planner inside your class.

By clicking on any lesson or resource inside the Lesson Planner, you can set a due date, leave a note for your students, and edit the lesson tasks. You can also pre-schedule the release date of any lesson, making planning and assigning content to your students a breeze!

See how the Lesson Planner works in the video below:

Our goal is to help make class prepping easier and more enjoyable. Give Ellii's Lesson Planner a try today.

Happy Teaching!

Hey again! 👋 We've released another new feature at Ellii called Ellii Polls that we know your students are going to love.

What is it? It’s a sessions-based tool that lets you conduct real-time interactive polls in your classroom (virtual or in person) to spark lively discussion, debate, and conversation with your English language learners.

It’s super simple, super engaging, and super fun. 😎

You can use Ellii Polls as a warm-up or cooldown activity to start or end any class. Or you can simply use Ellii Polls to introduce a new topic you might already be planning to teach. Review the description in each Ellii Poll for notes about related materials.

If you’re already a subscriber at Ellii, Ellii Polls are automatically included with your subscription.

Watch the demo to see Ellii Polls in action!

Here's how it works:

Teachers browse the Ellii Polls Index page to find a topic their students might be interested in. (Find a direct link in the Materials drop-down.)

Teachers preview the contents of the poll on the Poll Preview page. In addition to the questions for the polls, some key vocabulary that students will see and review in the survey is also included.

From the Poll Preview page, teachers click Start poll. A slide for a QR code/link appears to share with students.

Students join the activity in real time by scanning the code with the camera app on their phone or typing the link into a browser.

Teachers can see students joining the activity.

Teachers begin the poll, launching one slide at a time.

After students submit answers to a poll question, the class is prompted to look up at the teacher's screen to review and discuss the results.

Teachers move the activity along as quickly or as slowly as they wish.

That's it! It's super simple and we'll be adding new polls regularly.

Note that this feature is in beta mode. We are counting on our active Ellii subcribers to use the feedback form at the end of each poll to help us improve the feature as we build many more polls for a wide variety of learners. Please share your feedback!

We're happy to announce that Ellii has been chosen as one of a handful of delegate companies to represent Canada on the upcoming Team Canada trade mission to Japan. We'll be accompanying Mary Ng, Canada's minister of export promotion, international trade, small business, and economic development. We plan to be in Osaka on October 29 and 30, and in Tokyo from October 31 to November 3.

Why is Japan so important to Ellii?

Japan has a very special place in our hearts here at Ellii. I first began working on the concept for this company while living and teaching English in Kanagawa from 1997 to 2002. And although I launched the site just after returning to Canada in the fall of '02, most of the original product was designed in Japan for the Japanese teaching market. Today, Ellii is used in more than 10,000 schools in more than 100 countries around the world.

What will Ellii do in Japan?

You can learn more about the trade mission here. Besides attending meetings with the team, I will be specifically looking for a new distribution partner for the Japanese market. Please reach out if you'd like to talk.

Hey, great teachers!

We've made it simpler to share videos and flashcards with your students. You can now assign any video, flashcard category, or flashcard set to your students directly on your Lesson Planner. It's super easy. Here's how it works:

Click Add to class under any video or flashcard category title.

Select a class to put the media in.

Go to that class and drag the item to your Teaching lane when you want your students to have access. They will have instant access to the media.

When you're done with that content, move it to the Taught lane and it will no longer show up as an assigment.

Any flashcard categories or videos you share with your students will permanently show up in their Media tab for future access anytime.

Here's a video to show you in more detail.

Introducing Study Packs!

Hey there! 👋 We've released a new feature at Ellii called Study Packs that we think you're going to love! Typically, teachers using Ellii look for one lesson at a time to plan out their own customized curriculum. However, sometimes you just need a bundle of materials already curated for a specific need. So we built Study Packs as a way to easily assign a small collection of lessons in one simple click. Our Publishing team (who knows the content inside and out) puts these packs together, and every week they make and release new packs.

Here's how it works:

A Study Pack will typically have between 4 and 6 ready-made lessons that are woven together with a common focus such as a target structure, a situational theme, or a discussion topic.

We post these packs of lessons in a Study Pack index where you can quickly filter the packs by level or type.

When you see a pack you like, you can instantly move it to your Lesson Planner to assign it to a class.

Once the pack is assigned, you can choose whether your students have immediate access to all of the lessons, or you can choose to release one lesson at a time.

That's it. It's now super easy and super convenient to find curated collections of content and assign them all at once. Watch the video to see it in action. We hope you love it!

Tour around the ELT conference circuit as our team shares conference highlights and session reviews.

Conferences

That’s a picture of Tara Benwell, our VP of Publishing at Ellii. She’s been working at Ellii for 16 years and is employee number 3. You would think after so many years working here and attending 11 TESOL conferences, she wouldn’t have to be on booth setup duty anymore. But nope, that’s her, working with Lei Kayanuma (Director of Accounts), spending an entire laborious day framing the stands, building the podium, unpacking boxes, tightening screws, and lifting super heavy stuff.

Tara in the Exhibition Hall, setting up for TESOL 2023 in Portland, Oregon.

We’ve always been "all hands on deck" at Ellii, and we like it that way. Everyone at the company wears a ton of hats. Working this way has allowed us to just be us, and has enabled us to always stay closely connected to our product and our customers.

For two years, we tried to give everyone very specific tasks and keep everyone in their own lane. But that idea failed, and the fewer hats that people wore, the less connected we all seemed to be, so we’ve gone back to a haberdashery of labor, and we love it.

Tara and Lei using a new set of skills today as they build the frames for the booth.

If you write an email to us and your question is about content, it’s likely the people who respond will be from the Publishing team. The people who wrote the content are the same ones who answer customer support emails when it makes the most sense for them to answer. Why? Because they know the most about it and have the most to gain from hearing from any customer who has concerns, questions, or ideas about the materials.

Our customer service staff are also all hands on deck. They don’t just answer emails or phone calls. They create help docs, produce video tutorials, and work directly in tandem with our engineers and design staff to communicate the conversations from customers who have written in about issues and requests.

Lei, Tara, and Tanya pose for a pic at the Ellii booth after putting the final touches on this year's display.

When you run an all-hands-on-deck company, everyone gets a lot closer to the product and even closer to the customer. The reason this booth looks so amazing is because it was designed by people on the Product team, the Publishing team, and the Accounts team. It was set up today by Tara Benwell (VP of Publishing), Lei Kayanuma (Director of Accounts), and Tanya Trusler (Head of Video Production). And doesn't it look fantastic, by the way?

A special shout-out to Sarah at Ellii for designing this year's beautiful booth banner!

Embracing all hands on deck has allowed us to stay small, lean, agile, and innovative. Give it a try.

All Hands on Deck, All the Time

https://esllibrary.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/post/title_image/2370/Ben_All-Hands-on-Deck-All-the-Time_Banner.png

Why we built a super simple grading tool we call Grade Feed

Spending time reflecting on your students' work is such an important part of being a great teacher, don't you think? When you take the time to look at the assignments that your students have submitted and give them a grade, a comment, or some other type of feedback, two things happen. One, your students receive the attention they deserve and the insights they need to progress. And two, you as a teacher become more connected to the needs of your students.

When you are more familiar with how your students are doing and where attention is required, you become better at planning and teaching. You're able to pivot or adjust your roadmap in a more meaningful way when you've taken the time to reflect on each submission from your students.

But grading can be time-consuming and feel tedious if you don't have the necessary tools to make the process smooth. As a teacher, grading should feel essential, but it shouldn't feel like a chore. So at Ellii, we've built a tool we call Grade Feed with the intention of making the process of grading super simple, rewarding, and enjoyable.

How does Ellii's Grade Feed work?

We've designed Grade Feed like an inbox where only the assignments that require your attention show up. Student responses appear all on one page with a slider tool to let you easily give a grade or a star rating instantly. There's a place to leave a short written comment and a tool to record an audio response when needed.

In a snap, you can review a submission, reflect on the response, and submit a grade with feedback. One by one, your Grade Feed stack gets smaller, your students hear from you, and you get a better sense of the needs of each learner. It's a win-win. In our Grade Feed demo video below, I will show you exactly how it works. For step-by-step instructions, visit our Help Doc.
