Accessibility is fundamental to good learning. We're committed to making Ellii accessible and inclusive for all users, educators and learners alike, including those with disabilities. This page documents our standards, the features built into the platform, our current WCAG 2.2 conformance, and how to get in touch.
Our commitment
We aim to make Ellii accessible to all users, both educators and learners, and we view accessibility as fundamental to better learning outcomes, not simply a compliance requirement.
Our standard
We aim to meet or exceed WCAG 2.2 Level AA, which is the benchmark recognized by institutions complying with the ADA, Section 508, AODA, and similar legislation worldwide. A VPAT is available upon request for institutions conducting formal accessibility reviews.
Built into our process
Accessibility is considered during design and development, not treated as an afterthought. Our team keeps accessibility in mind as we build and improve the platform. We conduct manual review and automated testing as part of our QA process, and we do not rely on third-party accessibility overlay widgets.
Always improving
Accessibility is an ongoing effort. We acknowledge there are areas where our platform falls short, and we document those gaps honestly in our full VPAT. We continue to make improvements over time and prioritize issues that affect the most users.
Your feedback matters
We welcome feedback on the accessibility of our platform. If you encounter a barrier or have a suggestion for improvement, please reach out. Your input directly shapes our priorities. Creating an inclusive learning experience is an important part of what we do.
What we support
The following features are available to all Ellii users. No plugins, extensions, or extra setup steps are required. They reflect accessibility considerations that are part of how the platform is built, not just add-ons.
Full keyboard navigation
Every area of the platform is navigable by keyboard alone. Focus indicators are visible throughout, and interactive elements follow a logical tab order. Drag-and-drop features include keyboard equivalents.
Screen reader compatibility
Semantic HTML, ARIA roles, and live region attributes support screen readers including VoiceOver (macOS/iOS) and NVDA. Status messages and alerts are announced without requiring focus.
Text resizing & reflow
All text is set in relative units (rem) and scales with browser zoom up to 200%. Pages reflow responsively with no horizontal scrolling required except in data tables. Minimum width support is 320px.
Color & contrast
Text meets a minimum 4.5:1 contrast ratio. Color is never the sole means of conveying information. Icons, text, or changed outlines accompany any color-coded status. Links within paragraphs are underlined.
Alternative text for images
All meaningful images and media include text alternatives. Decorative images are marked appropriately. In exercises testing image-description skills, alt text is omitted by design.
Accessible authentication
Ellii offers Key Codes, a simplified login credential, to reduce memory load for students. Google and Clever SSO are supported, and password managers are fully compatible.
Captions & audio controls
No audio or video plays automatically. Subtitles are available on video content. Longer audio includes pause functionality. Short vocabulary clips (under 3 seconds) play on demand only.
Touch & pointer support
Interactive targets meet the 32px minimum size standard (WCAG 2.2). No multi-point or path-based gestures are required. All drag-and-drop interactions can be completed with the keyboard.
Form error identification
Errors are identified with text descriptions and ARIA attributes. Required fields are clearly marked. Success feedback is provided on submission. ARIA live attributes announce errors to screen reader users.
Consistent navigation
Navigation elements appear in the same order across all pages. A Help Docs widget is present in the bottom-right corner on every page. ARIA landmarks are implemented throughout.
Device orientation
All pages support both portrait and landscape orientation. The platform is fully responsive across desktop, tablet, and mobile screen sizes.
WCAG 2.2 conformance
We aim to meet or exceed WCAG 2.2 Level AA, which is the benchmark recognized by institutions complying with the ADA, Section 508, AODA, and similar legislation worldwide.
Our complete WCAG-edition VPAT is available upon request. You can send the request to hello@ellii.com. VPAT last updated: March 2026.
Recommended accommodations
While Ellii includes many built-in accessibility features, some students may need accommodations beyond the platform. The following guidance is for teachers and program administrators.
For adminsPlatform-level accommodations
- Accept late submissions: Ellii allows teachers to view and grade submissions after the due date.
- Use Key Code login or Google/Clever SSO for students who have difficulty managing credentials.
- Prioritize digital (web-based) lesson formats over PDF-based materials for students using screen readers.
- Before presenting to students who are Deaf or hard of hearing, make sure your students have enabled captions on videos.
- Use the Assign feature to select specific exercises, skipping those that rely on unsupported sensory content.
For teachersInstructor best practices
- For screen reader users: prioritize interactive digital exercises over PDF content.
- For low-vision students: encourage browser zoom (up to 200%). All Ellii pages reflow responsively.
- For students with motor disabilities: verify keyboard-only navigation in any exercise before assigning it.
- Captions are available and can be enabled for Deaf or hard-of-hearing students. Transcripts for listening exercises can be found in the Teacher's Notes.
- For students with cognitive disabilities: use shorter assignments, leverage tiered lesson levels, and consider Ellii Solo for self-paced learning.
