Introducing ESL Library's Flashcard Player

April 17, 2020

Update: Already familiar with our Flashcard Player? See v.2 updates in the second demo below.

Broadcast Digital Flashcards

We’re thrilled to announce the arrival of our new Flashcard Player. This digital tool allows teachers to present their own custom-made flashcard sets on a shared screen in a live class. Whether you’re teaching online or heading back to the classroom, we know you’re going to love ESL Library’s new addition (available for Standard and Plus plan members).

Flashcard Player Features (v.2)

The updated version (v.2) of our Flashcard Player allows teachers to:

  • launch a saved/edited flashcard set from My Folders (go to: Class Prep → My Folders → Flashcard Folders)
  • show each image from the set to elicit vocabulary (image only)
  • click on an image to reveal the text (image + text)
  • click on the text to hide the image (text only)
  • advance to the next image or go back
  • launch from Manage flashcards page after saving a set
  • view a sidebar menu
  • skip to a flashcard from sidebar menu
  • rename a flashcard from sidebar menu
  • remove a flashcard from sidebar menu (for the presentation only)
  • choose the default presentation style
  • choose the presentation font style (Standard or Literacy)

Coming Soon

Our designers and engineers are currently working on a few more advanced features for our Flashcard Player. In upcoming versions, you will be able to:

  • search for and add flashcards from a presentation menu
  • play audio for each word (see our new Picture Dictionary task)

Stay tuned!

This is a nice feature. I would also love the ability to assign sets of flashcards for students to review. Right now, I'm using Quizlet to do that but I would love to be able to do it from ESL Library.

Hi, Melissa. This will be the next step after v.3 is ready! In the meantime, you can assign the Image Match tasks within a lesson. The Flashcard Player will allow you to present and teach the words and the Image Match allows students to practice the words.

Kathy C.(Teacher)

Thanks for creating the digital flash card player. Can it only be used to “broadcast” with a class or can they be assigned to students who are in a class?
Thanks!

Hi Kathy. The Flashcard Player is currently just a presentation tool for teachers in a live class (online or face-to-face) with a shared screen. We will be building a new task type that allows you to assign a flashcard set of images for homework. Currently, you can only assign the Image Match task.

Stephanie P.(Teacher)

Hello, I would love to see the option of clicking on the word and it being pronounced for the student.

Hi Stephanie. This is definitely coming in a future version! Stay tuned.

This is fantastic! I know you are working on additional features for flashcards and I was wondering if audio is one of them. It would be a nice feature for online students when practicing new vocabulary for homework at their own pace.
Thanks again for all your hard work as well as accommodating teachers with the digital platform.
All the best to you and yours during this challenging time.
Cheers
Michael^^

Hi Michael. Thanks for checking in! Yes, audio is coming in a future version.

Jenny K.(Teacher)

Great thank you! I would also LOVE to assign (so the material can be "taught" to students who can't be on the live session, and can be reviewed by them). Any idea on the timeline for that?

Thanks for being so amazingly accommodating to our situation of having to teach our students from home. Your website is superb. Each added feature is much appreciated.

Thanks so much for the sweet words, Joyce! I have passed them on to our team.

Roberta L.(Teacher)

I would love for the flashcards to also be randomly arranged. Thank you for doing this!

When we add the menu, you will be able to easily rearrange the flashcards during or before a presentation. We'll eventually add some quiz features, and that's where "random" might come in! Thanks for your request!

BTW , do you think the flashcards should be randomly presented when you can eventually assign a set to students? Or do you think ESL Library or the teacher should preset the order?

Tina N.(Teacher)

Hi. This is great! Very user friendly. I was wondering if there could be a font option. As a teacher of ESL students the lower case"g" and "a" can pose a problem for early readers. Thanks so much for this addition!

Hi, Tina! Yes, there will be a "normal" and "literacy" font option in the menu. Coming soon!

I am so grateful to esllibrary as a digital resource for my classes with CLBs 1-6 during the Coronavirus .

We're very happy to hear that!

Hi,

I would love to see something where my students don't have to sign into the sight. They are very low level literacy and really at this point don't have the ability to use this sight if they have to sign in. I love the idea and will make up some sets for in class use when we eventually return to classes.

Hi Teresa! Your students don't have to sign up or log in for the Flashcard Player. You launch the images during a live class using the broadcast feature: https://ellii.com/blog/launch-or-preview-digital-tasks If you want students to do tasks for homework, they do need an account. They don't need an email. We are working on making the sign up/log-in even more user-friendly.
