Introduction to the Nursing Assistants Course

This unit is built around a simple, friendly interaction between a nursing assistant and a patient. The nursing assistant introduces herself, offers reassurance, and explains the admission process. This unit includes vocabulary review, listening practice, and comprehension tasks.

Patient Admission

This unit is built around a follow-up interaction between a nursing assistant and a patient. The nursing assistant explains which procedures and tools she is going to use to take the patient's vital signs, including his temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate. This unit includes vocabulary review, listening practice, and comprehension tasks.

Taking Vital Signs

This unit focuses on helping a patient with walking, transferring from bed to chair, and using a mobility aid. Students will also learn how to introduce a patient to a physical therapist. This unit includes vocabulary review, listening practice, and comprehension tasks.

Assisting with Mobility

This unit features a dialogue between a nurse and a nursing assistant. The nurse asks the assistant to check on a patient during her rounds and, in the process, reviews basic medical abbreviations and terms commonly used by nurses and nursing assistants in healthcare settings. This unit includes vocabulary review, listening practice, and comprehension tasks.

This mid-course assessment checks vocabulary and comprehension of the first four units in this English for Nursing Assistants course. 

Mid-Course Assessment

This unit is built around a dialogue between a nursing assistant and a nurse about a patient's needs during meals. Students focus on language used for monitoring dietary preferences and restrictions. This unit includes vocabulary review, listening practice, and comprehension tasks.

Mealtime Assistance

In this unit, students review language that nursing assistants use to promptly answer call bells and address patient needs. They also learn how to communicate patient requests to the nurse. This unit includes vocabulary review, listening practice, and comprehension tasks.

Responding to Call Bells

In this unit, students learn language needed for preparing patients for discharge by providing instructions and arranging transportation. This unit includes vocabulary review, listening practice, and comprehension tasks.

Discharge Planning

This unit focuses on language a nursing assistant needs for updating a colleague on patient status and needs. Students review sharing information about patient conditions. Many previously learned keywords from the course are recycled in this unit. This unit includes vocabulary review, listening practice, and comprehension tasks.

Daily Shift Handover

This final assessment checks vocabulary and comprehension of the last four units of this English for Nursing Assistant's course. 

Final Assessment 

This course is based around common scenarios that involve a nursing assistant and a patient and/or colleague. Students learn important vocabulary and phrases that nursing assistants need on the job. Available in print or digital.
