In this lesson, students read three stories about Indigenous people (Maxwell Johnson, Josephine Mandamin, and Chantel Moore). Each story uses the simple present and past tenses. Students answer comprehension questions for each. More tasks are available in the digital version, including vocabulary practice, grammar review exercises, and discussion questions.



Indigenous People  – Simple Present & Past 

In this lesson, students learn how to use _could_ and _couldn’t_ to describe their past abilities. Students will also demonstrate their understanding of when to use present and past modals of ability in context.

We recommend teaching this lesson after our Modals of Ability – Present lesson. Note that the images and activities in both lessons are similar so that the vocabulary is familiar for low-level learners.

By reviewing the main categories of non-count nouns, students learn to distinguish count nouns from non-count nouns. They also learn ways to make non-count nouns countable with measurement and container words.

This lesson focuses on the quantifiers ​_many_​ and _​much​_. Through a variety of exercises, students will learn when to use these two common quantifiers.

Students read about and discuss climate change. They review the quantifiers _many_ and _much_ and survey their classmates on what can be done to prevent further climate change.

In this lesson, students learn how to form singular and plural possessive nouns, including nouns that end in -s. They also review the difference between possessive nouns, adjectives, and pronouns.

Students read about “The American Dream” and discuss how they would define it. This lesson includes punctuation practice using apostrophes with words ending in -s.

This lesson focuses on the quantifiers ​_some_​ and ​_any_​. Through a variety of exercises, students will learn when to use these two common quantifiers.

In this lesson, students learn the form and sentence positions of adverbs of manner. Students are also introduced to adverbs with two forms.

This comprehensive lesson includes explanations, examples, and practice with prepositions of place and direction as well as asking for and giving directions. Students also review vocabulary for places and buildings using picture dictionaries and maps. If your learners are quite low, you may choose to only do the first half of this lesson (up to and including page 8).

In this lesson, students learn how to find the restroom. They learn different vocabulary related to public and private restrooms, and they review prepositions and adverbs of direction and place.

The first person you ask doesn't always have the directions you need. In this lesson, a man eventually finds his way to the post office. Students practice asking for and giving directions.

Students practice listening to and responding to questions related to life in a new neighborhood.

In this comprehensive lesson, students review and practice different types of prepositions such as time, place, direction, and method. They will see all the prepositions listed with examples, and then they will complete various practice exercises.

This lesson reviews the three main ways to form the future tense (with _will, be going to,_ and _be + ing_). Students will study the differences between these forms and practice using them through individual and group exercises.

In this lesson, students read three stories that use the simple future (with “be going to”) in context. They answer comprehension questions and respond to questions about themselves using the simple future.

Students review language and useful expressions for making predictions. They practice common English phrases and review how to use the simple future tense with _think_, _bet_, _probably_, and _likely_. They also learn how to avoid some common errors when making predictions.
