Introduction to the English for Truck Drivers Course

This unit introduces students to the world of commercial driving, including the purpose of a CDL, the different types of licenses, and the rules set by the DOT and FMCSA. Understanding the responsibilities of a professional truck driver will help students build a foundation of safety, legal awareness, and confidence as they begin their training.

Introduction to Commercial Driving

This unit introduces the steps of a pre-trip inspection through a conversation between a driver and instructor. Students will learn how to check tires, brakes, fluids, and lights using simple language and a checklist to support safe and legal vehicle operation.

Pre-Trip Inspection

This unit explains the meanings of common road signs and how their shapes, colors, and symbols help drivers make quick, safe decisions. Learning to recognize warning signs, detours, and hazard alerts will help students respond to road conditions and prevent accidents.

Understanding Road Signs & Hazards

This unit features a training conversation focused on key backing maneuvers: straight-line backing, offset backing, and alley docking. Students will learn the importance of mirror use, angle control, and calm communication to safely perform these skills during practice and the CDL road test.

Mid-Course Assessment

This unit introduces the Hours of Service (HOS) rules and explains how commercial drivers track driving time, rest breaks, and mileage using paper or electronic logbooks. Understanding how to stay compliant and organized helps keep drivers safe, avoid fatigue, and follow DOT regulations.

Hours of Service & Logbooks

This unit presents a realistic dispatcher-driver conversation about traffic delays, rerouting, and schedule updates. Students will practice using clear and professional communication to report problems, confirm instructions, and stay safe on the road.

Dispatch Communication

This unit teaches students how to recognize and respond to mechanical problems like flat tires, leaks, or engine trouble while driving. By learning the correct safety steps—such as using hazard lights, setting warning triangles, and reporting issues clearly—students can stay calm and protect themselves and others in an emergency.

Roadside Emergency

This unit uses a training conversation to review four critical CDL topics: coupling and uncoupling, shifting gears, load securement, and air brake safety checks. Students will learn essential vocabulary and safety procedures that are required for passing the CDL test and operating a truck safely on the job.

Systems & Safety Operations

This final assessment checks vocabulary and comprehension of the final four units in this English for Truck Drivers course.

Final Assessment

This course will introduce students to vocabulary and expressions used in different areas of truck driving, such as vehicle inspections, road signs, and safety procedures.
